Babylorn (Electronic book text)

The book tells the story of Kirsty who is in her early thirties married to an abusive husband. She is already thinking how she can extricate herself from this toxic relationship when revelations made in a letter from a deceased aunt prove the catalyst to precipitate changes in her life. Kirsty discovers that she was adopted by de facto from a Magdalene Laundry in Ireland. For her to know this explains so many things she has previously questioned, such a family likeness and personality differences. She leaves her marriage and heads to a small village in Kerry to seek her heritage. She finds employment as a carer to an elderly lady whose son Mattie is not all he seems. Gradually it becomes revealed that he inhabits a suspect world in Dublin. Kirsty is befriended by Sister Mary Cecelia who is home to nurse her dying brother. Through this connection Kirsty locates Biddy, her biological mother. However, her disappointment becomes profound upon discovery that she was conceived as the result of rape and Biddy has no wish to meet her daughter. Kirsty locates a psychotherapist in Killarney and with his help comes to terms with her divorce and rejection from Biddy. Although dealing with deeply emotive subjects the book is interspersed with humour from Mattie, the dubious Dubliner who temps her with his seduction techniques. Kirsty emerges as a strong woman on the brink of a new romance.
