Mapping out the lively current debate about Jesus, Hurtado explains the evidence, issues, and positions at stake. He goes on to treat the opposition to -- and severe costs of -- worshiping Jesus, the history of incorporating such devotion into Jewish monotheism, and the role of religious experience in Christianity's development out of Judaism. The follow-up to Hurtado's award-winning "Lord Jesus Christ" (2003), this book provides compelling answers to queries about the development of the church's belief in the divinity of Jesus.

If you don't have the time to read Hurtado's 'Lord Jesus Christ' but are interested in the outcome of his research this is the book to read. In short he argues that contrary to the idea that Jesus' divinity evolved into him becoming divine, almost (or probably) something happened after his death which made early Christians to be devoted to him almost instantaneously. The book is very thought provoking. It is compiled from articles Hurtado wrote over some time. This makes it easy readable. You are also not forced to read the chapters in order.
