In suburban London, Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill) purchases a new synth, that his children name Anita (Gemma Chan), to replace his oft-absent wife Laura (Katherine Parkinson). But when she returns to find her husband's new purchase, Laura begins to feel threatened by the synthetic human and worryingly suspects that synths may be capable of experiencing human emotions.
Meanwhile, retired synth scientist Dr. George Millican (William Hurt) starts to experience problems with his outdated synth Odi (Will Tudor) while elsewhere another synth scientist, Professor Edwin Hobbs (Danny Webb), leads a search for a trio of missing synths.
