Death in the Vestry and Other Stories (Paperback)

Geoffrey Haygarth, retired music teacher and village organist, is the detective in Elegies, a trio of crime stories. First, he discovers a body, evidently murdered, in his own church; several of the small congregation appear to have motives. Next, a study of old documents uncovers some murky secrets in his own family. Lastly, he is faced with an outbreak of anonymous letters in the village. Of three short fables which follow, one records the Devil's involvement in cricket, and another a unicorn's experience of virgins. The final tales are set in Westminster Abbey. A visiting owl has an unexpected effect on the music and worship, and then a young choir member and his girl friend find themselves part of an old Abbey legend. To conclude, there is a brief, poetic "Christmas Supplement".
