Purchase of new guddies and guddelas for the elephants attached to the Garo Hills Battahon has raised the net cost in that battalion, and ia the N&ga ' Hills, the transport having only been started during the year, the increase was unavoidable. The bullock cart attached to the Kriga Hilis Battalion has been reported to te very useful. I think, on the whole, I am justified in stating that our transport is in an efficient condition. 60. The total number of persons who escaped from the custody of the police during E the year 1896 was 32, against 43 in the preceding year, or a decrease of 11. Of the 32 persons, 14 escaped from jails, 7 from police stations and courts, and 11 while on transit. Tlie number of recaptures and their percentage to escapes were ll- and 559, against 29 and 674 respectively. 61. The strength of the escorts furnished by the Civil, Armed Civil, and the Military Escorts Police, during the years 1895 and 1896, is shown in the statement below. Patrols from thana to thana with prisoners and police sent with pay to outstations have not been taken into account: Besides opium and stamps, treasure amounting to Rs. 68,30,983 was escorted during I89 i, against Rs. 78,39,572 in the preceding year; and a total number of 815 prisoners and lunatics were guarded on transit, against 792. There was a large decrease in the amount of treasure escorted by the men of the Silchar Battalion, as compared with 1895. The men of the North Lnshai Hills Battalion occasionally escorted prisoners to Silchar and treasury remittance on return...
