Excerpt from book: A VISIT TO A NEEDLE FACTORY. "What shall we do to-morrow, Paul?" said Edward, as the two boys came home from school on Friday afternoon. "I'll tell you what I should like to do," replied Paul, "I should like to see inside of that new needle factory out on the West Side. Will Baker was out there one day last week and went all through it with his father and he says it was great fun and very interesting too." Just then they saw their father coming down the street, and Paul called out, "Father, may Edward and I go to the needle factory to-morrow?" "Yes, I think so," said their father, "and to make sure that you may get in I will telephone Mr. Wood, the superintendent, this evening and ask his permission for you to go through every part of the works." Later in the evening their father said to them, "I have just talked to Mr. Wood and he says he will be glad to show you all about the factory tomorrow, if you will be there promptly at nine o'clock." Nine o'clock the next morning found the boys waiting at the private office of the superintendent. In a few moments Mr. Wood came out. "Good morning, boys, I see you are on time,"said he. "I suppose you wish to begin at the beginning, so we will go to the stock room first." This was a large room on the first floor of the factory where piled along the walls were great rolls of steel wire of different degrees of thickness. "This wire," said Mr. Wood, laying his hand on a bundle near him, "is what we call Number 12. It is the finest we use, and from it are made cambric needles. That coarse wire you see on the other side of the room is Number i, and from it are made the heavy canvas needles.
