Marston, Ames, Ia. In beginning this paper, I wish, first of all, to acknowledge valuable assistance received from Professor S. W. Beyer concerning the geology of the different drainage areas of Iowa, and from him and Professor W. I-I. Stevenson for valuable information concerning the character oi the soils of the different areas. The most significant classilication of Iowa into drainage areas will be in accordance with the surface geological formations, with subdivisions of the Kansas Driit area in accordance with the different soils and topography. By this plan, we have the following classification: IOWA DRAINAGE AREAS 1. DRIFTLESS AREA, in the northern corner of the State, occuping the space just west of the river, one to two counties wide, extending from Clinton County_ on the south to Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties on the north. 2. IOWAN DRIFT AREA, extending from the driftless area on the east, approximately on the north line of Jasper, Poweshiek and lowa Counties on the south, to a line running...
