The Bartholomew Survey Atlas of Scotland, 1912 (Hardcover, Limited edition)

Almost 100 years since publication, J G Bartholomew's Survey Atlas of Scotland of 1912 remains the most recent major Atlas of Scotland. The Survey Atlas was the second edition of The Atlas of Scotland, published in1895, and marks a high point in Scottish cartography. In this limited edition Birlinn reproduces the complete 1912 edition, which contains a series of 68 plates of maps and plans, illustrating the topography, geology, climate, and the historical, political and commercial features of Scotland. In addition thematic mapping (mammals, birds, reptiles, deer forests, and languages of Scotland) that appeared in the 1895 edition but not in the 1912 edition are included. To accompany the Atlas, Chris Fleet, Map Collection Manager at the National Library of Scotland writes on 'The Making of the Survey Atlas' and Karla Baker, the Bartholomew Archive Assistant, provides a biography of J G Bartholomew. Both essays draw on material recently discovered within the Bartholomew Archive.
