And hence in all countries, Protestant or Papal, those claiming to be disciples of Christ, whether they be teachers or laymen, who '"' come to be ministered unto and not to minister," exert an evil influence upon inquiring minds. Is it too much to say, that while we are sure that the best men in all ages have been made so by faith in Christ, and while the truly good men of our own age are undoubtedly found among professing Christians; yet, if an angel who understood the New Testament were to look upon the earth for the first time, he would scarcely conceive that many of the..Church forms, and Church offenses against the plain Scriptures, which are prevalent in our own times, could be predicated upon the simple, self-denying doctrines and practice inculcated in the Gospel of Jesus of Nazareth? We shall reach in the next paragraph an aspect of the subject which will relieve our minds from any painful sensations which these discriminations may have produced. We make them because we are anxious that the reader of this volume should look at the " excellency of the glory of God, as it is revealed in the face of Jesus Christ," and not have his conceptions of truth and duty perverted by the imperfect exhibitions of Christian character which he sees about him.
