This last is of great importance in the interests of the future welfare of our infant churches. "It is a point that has not received that full consideration which it needs, and which I believe it will yet receive. "If other missions are like our Bechuanaland mission, then there are, lying all over the mission field, numerous small places--villages and hamlets--and also, what is a more serious matter, many not inconsiderable towns, almost entirely, if not altogether, uncultivated. Such places left uncultivated by the Christian Church are not left uncultivated by the devil, and they become centres of evil, and are ready to burst up volcano-like and pour out a sudden curse, withering and blasting the patient labour of years. "We have recently had a sorrowful manifestation of this in and round the district of Kuruman. For if the devil is powerless to hold men's hearts where the Gospel is preached he can work his own will where he is left to himself, and he does not neglect his opportunity.
