Rockefeller's committee on benevolence and was given a charter by congress and formally organized In January. 1903. The plan was designed and adapted to assist Mr. Rockefeller in distributing bis gifts to education and to afford a medium through which other men of means might contribute to the same end. The board, a few days after THE GENERAL EDUCATION BOARD. Organized Feb. 27, 1902. Its initial meeting, received from Mr. Rockefeller the sum of $1,000,000. the use of which was to be confined to the study and promotion of education in the southern states. June 30, 1905. the board was notified that Mr. Rockefeller would donate $10,000,000, the principal of which was to be held in perpetuity as a foundation for education, the income to be used for the benefit of Institutions of learning in such manner as might be deemed best adapted to promote a comprehensive system of higher education In the United States. In 1907 Mr. Rockefeller gave the board $32,000,000 and In 1909 added $10,000,000 more to the fund.
