After the war, she manages to immigrate to Israel where her daughter thrives among the young in the new atmosphere of freedom and self-reliance. Evelyn, however, does not adjust to the Israeli lifestyle and longing for her home in Istanbul, she decides to return, after an absence of over twenty years. Here she meets Michel again and love is rekindled, but Evelyn cannot rest until she has avenged her departed husband. She conceives an elaborate scheme on her husband's disappearance, convincing the German authorities of her entitlement to compensation. She ultimately succeeds, but at a price
