The route, 50.95 miles (82.00km) in length, is a northerly alternate route to NY28 between both locations. The highway passes through several communities before terminating at Route28 in North Creek. Over its western end, it undergoes a 10-mile (16km) concurrency with NY30 through the town of (named after the lake) Long Lake, where Route30 splits off, and Route28N heads eastward through mountainous regions of the Adirondack Park.
