The Columbiad (Paperback)

Joel Barlow was an 18th century American poet and politician. He attended Dartmouth College, before graduating from Yale University in 1778. During the Revolutionary War Barlow was a chaplain for the Massachusetts brigade. In 1787 he published a long poem The Vision of Columbus. In 1807 he published a sumptuous volume The Columbiad, which was an enlarged edition of his Vision of Columbus, more pompous even than the original. The Columbiad is a patriotic epic poem in support of Jeffersonian democratic idealism.
