Told through the eyes of award-winning food writer Hope Malau, the book features authentic, traditional dishes cooked with love, and acknowledges the ability of countless unsung kitchen heroes – the mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings – to make culinary magic with often very little.
It is a vital glimpse into South African township life; moreover, it is a celebration of culture, resilience, human spirit, community and family – through the shared meal.

A paean to township food and culture, and a joy to read (and to have). At least two recipes have key ingredients which don't feature in the instructions: Cremora Tart p.154 (ingredient: condensed milk) and Coconut Squares p.164 (ingredient: apricot jam). These omissions could easily have been avoided. Despite this the book is still a treasure trove of information, lovingly - and visually beautifully - presented.
Excellent cookbook, filled with the Sotho recipes â a culture I connected to coming from Bloemfontein. Thank you for sharing your stories Hope Malau!
