The right way of preaching the Gospel. In discussing the right mode of preaching the Gospel, it is not my intention to treat it in a systematic, abstract, general way, but, by delineating the leading features in the Apostle Paul's manner of preaching the Gospel, l as these are presented to us in the passage under consideration, to exhibit a picture of the manner in which the Gospel ought always to be preached. By looking attentively at the text, we perceive that the essence of preaching the Gospel consists in a statement of the truth respecting the way of salvation through Jesus Christ, and of its evidence; that, in this statement of truth and evidence respecting the way of salvation through Christ, there should be a constant and direct reference to the volume of divine revelation as the grand storehouse of both; that this statement of scriptural truth and evidence respecting the way of salvation through Christ, ought to be orderly; that this scriptural and orderly statement of truth and evidence respecting the way of salvation through Christ ought to be simple and perspicuous; and, finally, that this scriptural, orderly, perspicuous, statement of truth and evidence respecting the way of salvation through Christ ought to be often repeated. These principles are, all of them, clearly deducible from the words of the text, and, taken together, they constitute a very comprehensive view of the right way of preaching the Gospel. Let us briefly attend to them in their order. (1.) The truth and its evidence must be stated. In the first place, then, I observe that the essence of preaching the Gospel consists in a statement of truth and evidence respecting the way of salvation through Christ.
