The morn of life rose bright and fair, The mottled clouds that hovered there But sparkling dewdrops bore; And, heedless of the future hours, I sported 'mongst Spring's early flowers, And sighed for nothing more. I lightly skimmed o'er pleasure's sea, So swallows flit o'er wave and lea As though repose were pain; I dipped my wings in music's stream, But rose content with some faint gleam, The echo of a strain. The tones of love breathe soft and low, The strains of love like torrents flow,? They had no charm for me. I dwelt too happy in the ark Of freedom, lightly to embark On passion's troubled sea. There hovered round me many who With tender words would strive to woo, And tap my soul's deep springs. Such flickering meteors ne'er had won My heart?it soared up to the sun On fancy's radiant wings. Yet oft I wish'd some heart were mine, Round which like ivy I might twine My hopes, and on it rest. I loved to picture such a being, On whom I could confiding lean As on a mother's breast. Imagination gilds a scene, And robes it in earth's brightest green, And then it melts away. So faded every scene that I Had pictured of futurity Illumined by love's ray. And soon my heart resistless fell A victim to th' unconscious spell Which sparkled in the eye Of one whose mind was rich with all That could a maiden's...
