[A Lecture is a stated part in the Morning Service of the Church of Scotland, and follows immediately after the first prayer. The Minister reads some passage of Scripture, consisting, for the mofi part, of a considerable number of verses: these he successively explains, and, where necessary, illustrates them, not only from the context, but both from sacred and profane history. Beside making observations upon each verse, he generally, upon concluding, draws moral inferences from the whole. It is obvious, that the practice of Lecturing must, on those accounts, not only give scope to the learning of the preacher, and to his talent for bringing many particulars into one, or a few points of view, but must tend, at the same time to make the people more acquainted with the Sacred Scriptures, and to derive, from the experience of past times, very useful instructions with regard to life.] Psalm I. 1. Blessed is (he man that walketh not In tlic counsel of' tJie ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sittetli In the scat of the scornful. 2. B/tt his delight is in the law of the Lord, and In his law doth he meditate day and night. 3. And he shall be like a tree planted bif the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; Ais leaf also shall not wither and whatsoever he doth shall prosper. 4. The ungodfij are not so: but are like the chaff' which the wind dii-ceth moat/. 5. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6. For the Lord knuweth the way of the righteous: but the wat/ of the ungodly shall perish. CHRISTIANS and Brethren ! The most critical . period of human life is when we set out into the world.
