Excerpt from book: 6 THE CAMPAIGN OF A.D. 1708. On ye 17th about 5 in ye Afternoon we came to Ostend, ye weather being bad. It was Wensday ye 21 before we landed, and was that day towed in vessels, on y' 22 to Ghent. While we lay on board we had continual Distruc- tion in ye foretop; ye Pox above board; ye Pleague between Decks: hell in ye forecastle, and ye Devil att ye Helm: so that we may easely judge what course we steered; and amongst al other Pleagues one of ye greatest was, wh way to confound our Allowance, wh was so sparingly distributed amongst us that ye Purser was dayly blest wth ye Souldiers Prayers, being grown as fatt as whiping Post: that indeed according to ye old saying: Sharp ye word and sharp ye Deed: and so sharp weather; that for one while I shall care for any more voyages to ye Northward. Thus haveing weathered ye Main Point and safely arrived att our desired haven, we bid adiew to ye wooden world, being translated from Purgatory to Parredise, and from pinch gutt to whole Allowance, began to look like ourselves, in our old station, where takeing a glass or 2 of brandy caused us to forgett ye old greivance, though it was if rightly understood a fateague for ye Devill. Now to proceed wth my Journall. chapter{Section 4JOURNAL. Hrs Grace ye Duke of Maelbourough, our Cap" Gen11 haveing given orders for marching to ye Cheife commanding Officers in their respective Garrisons where ye English and Confederate Forces quartred last year; Leftn Gen11 Lumbley who then commanded ye English forces in ye Citty of Ghent, on Tuesday May ye 11th marcht out ye forces of that Garrison horse and foot wth y, e Train of Artillery 3 leagues, and encampt at Urdigham. The 12th we marcht 4 leagues and encampt att Shemberg. The 15th we marcht 4 leagues and encampt att Belling: here...
