"We will now continue our journey through this beautiful valley, one part of which is so narrow that there is nothing but the road, and the river, which runs by its side, between the rocks. On our way, we shall be able to call at the house of a Mr. Tofte, who is a farmer, but, at the same time, a descendant of the old Norwegian kings. He is very proud of this, and is fond of showing the beautiful silver plate which has belonged to his family at different times. When the present King of Sweden and Norway was travelling to Drontheim to be crowned, he stopped at Tofte's house, and used this silver plate for dinner. "And now, children, we must stop for tonight, and to-morrow we will all go over a Norwegian farm, and see what it is like." "Uncle John," said little Mary, "wasn't it very wicked of the Norwegians to kill Colonel Sinclair and his soldiers?" "Well, dear, both sides, I am afraid, were wicked; but you must remember that the Scotch were the attacking party, and the Norwegians were fighting for the liberty of their country; so I think we must make excuses for them." CHAPTER VI. HERR TOFTE.--FARMING IN NORWAY. "We stopped at the house of Mr. Tofte, and as we want to visit a Norwegian farm, I am sure we cannot do better than to spend the day at his comfortable place, and see what we can see of the farms in the neighbourhood.
