Not illustrated. 1836 Excerpt: ...therefore, the sophistry may be that would teach us the necessity of having "spiritual flesh and spiritual blood to nourish the soul, which, being of a spiritual nature, cannot be supported by that body, or temple of Jesus Christ, which was born of the Virgin Mary," it is nothing better than an entire mistake of the whole subject; for our souls may be, and are supported, sustained, and nourished by a sure evidence of the love of God to us; and this the sacrifice of Christ, for our sakes, constantly furnishes us with, from day to day, --aye, from minute to minute, and from breath to breath. This is Living By Christ, because it is living by faith on the Son of God; eating his flesh and drinking his blood. The words that the Lord Jesus spoke were, indeed, spirit and life, and they were to be understood spiritually; but it by no means thence follows, that they were to be understood mystically. Neither let us suppose, for one moment, there is a shadow of argument against our being saved by the sacrifice of that holy body, designated as " that temple of Jesus Christ which was born of the Virgin Mary, and in which he walked, lived, and suffered, in the land of Judea," because of the objection which is made on account of the declaration of Our Lord, that he came down from heaven, and because he says, (John vi. 58, ) " This is that bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness and are dead; he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever." For when it is taken into account that the Lord Jesus, after he had made this declaration, and knew the offence that was taken at it by most of those who heard it, instead of conciliating them, as he, probably, might have done, if he had told them it was spiritu...
