The part that we visited was what is called the ford of the Jordan, which is believed to be the place where our-Saviour was baptised, and so we must have been standing upon the very ground on which our Saviour stood on that memorable occasion when, at the beginning of Hie great work, He came to be baptised at this place. I along with others had a bath in the Jordan, which was very pleasant, as the weather was very hot. The trouble began when we wanted to come out, as the bottom of the river is very muddy, and as soon as I got near the side and my feet touched the bottom I began to sink in the mud;, and if I had not kept moving I should have very soon been fast in the mud and drowned. When I did get out I was caked with mud right above my knees. I do not wonder that Naaman wished to be cured of his leprosy by washing in the rivers of Damascus rather than in the muddy Jordan.-Still one cannot help feeling some slight emotion at the first sight of the Jordan, for it was here where our Saviour was baptised, where Elislui crossed on dry land after he had "to 1 from Elijah, and it is somewhere near this place where the children of Israel crossed on their way to the Promised Land. The latter was one of the strangest miracles ever recorded. The stream rushing from above stood still l.il i the water that had passed continued to flow to the Dead Sea. The priests entered first, and lood in the middle of the channel till the entire host had passed over, the ark of God being thus interposed between the people and the suspended waters.
