The schools set up by the pietists of Halle were among the most influential establishments in the history of school education in early 18th century Germany. Proceeding on the basis of recent research on the pedagogical tenets of August Hermann Francke (1663-1727), the articles in this volume thematize the history of education in the early modern age from a variety of perspectives.
