Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are common disorders that afflict the majority of individuals who live in westernized societies. Moreover, all these common medical disorders occur with increasing incidence as the population ages. Previous meetings on this subject have provided remarkable advances in diabetes research and patient care. This volume, based on the most recent meeting, provides a reflection of prospective research which will contribute to promoting not only the proper management of diabetes mellitus and prevention of its complications, but also effective control of the frequently occurring cardiovascular risk factors in diabetic patients.
