Cost of rearing hedge, 50 cents per rod; stone, S2.50; rails per hundred, $4.00; native lumber, $25.00 to $30.00 per thousand; pine, $30.00 to 40.00. The herd law is not in force. It is thought that sheep raising would be profitable but for the ravages of wolves. MITCHELL. Organized in 1870. Population in 1870,485; in 1874,5,473: increase since 1870,4,9SS. Principal Towns.--Beloit, the county seat, population 540; Cawker City, population 4S0. Face of the Country.--Bottom lands 20 per cent., upland 80 per cent., forest 2 per cent., prairie 98 per cent. General surface of the country--some portions level, remainder undulating. Timber.--The limited area of timber is confined to the streams. Varieties, cottonwood, oak, ash, walnut, hackberry and box elder. Principal Streams.---Salt creek, flowing from west to east. Solomon river, from west to east; tributaries flowing south, Oak, Granite, Limestone, Brown's, Mulberry, Plum and Asher creeks; tributaries flowing north, Car, Walnut, Turkey, La' en and Third creeks. The county is not well supplied with springs; good well water at a depth of from 12 to 30 feet. Coal.--A little coal of poor quality has been found in the southern part of the county, but none of consequence developed. Buildimj Stone, etc.--White magnesian limestone is found within convenient reach of all parts of the county; salt springs in the southern and northwestern portions.
