After his high school graduation, eighteen-year-old Josh Malintek drinks too much, runs a red light, and his brand-new Blazer is hit by a pick-up truck. Four of his friends are killed instantly, his best friend Jeremy is seriously hurt, but he and Jeremyas girlfriend are barely harmed. In the following days, he is miserable because of the realization that he is a murderer. Although he attends the memorial service, he runs home and tries to commit suicide. When he visits Jeremy, his friend rejects him. The only positive things that lift his spirits are working at a grocery store and helping a teacher build a community playground. However, he has several encounters with the parents of the young people who died. Throughout the book he has to endure several steps of the legal process and worries that heall have to spend time in prison.
