Neuf Nouvelles: Hommage aux Sngalaises is a textbook/reader for the advanced courses of French literature and culture. It includes works by authors from Senegal or living in Senegal, all writing about the same subject: different aspects of womens life in Senegal. Conceived as a textbook, the editor, M. Kathleen Madigan, professor of French in the Department of Modern Languages at Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri, wisely divided the book in sections organized as follows: biography of each writer, interview, other works by the same author and finally the work studied. This one is followed by a set of questions divided into reading comprehension, analysis and critical thinking, and additional suggestions for research, discussion or writing. The volume is completed with interviews to three Senegalese women from other areas of knowledge such as history, science and sociology to give a comprehensive image of historic and contemporary women in Senegal. In that way, Neuf Nouvelles, subscribes to ACTFLs National Standards for Foreign Language Education: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities.
