Puberty is a notoriously difficult time for any teenager.  However, Purvis argues that compared to girls, the problems which boys experience during puberty are more complicated, less discussed and often misunderstood. Boys are more vulnerable than girls during puberty because thanks to their male brains and hormones they are less able to communicate their conflicts and anxieties about the fundamental changes that occur in their bodies and psyche.

The purpose of this book is to provide parents with information about their sons’ development at puberty, providing them with answers to questions that their sons may ask. The book will also emphasise the importance of building self-confidence at this awkward stage, providing parents with insight into the kinds of conflicts their sons can experience in adolescence, which they themselves may have long forgotten.

Many of the conclusions reached in this book are based on Purvis’ s experience with adolescent and adult men at his clinical practice based in Oslo. This book should appeal to all those who have contact with boys during puberty and early adolescence: parents, teachers and psychologists.
