Medullary Sponge Kidney (Paperback)

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Medullary sponge kidney (also known as Cacchi Ricci disease) is a congenital disorder of the kidneys characterized by cystic dilatation of the collecting tubules in one or both kidneys. In people with nephrolithiasis, the frequency of medullary sponge kidney has been reported by various authors to be 12 - 21%. The disease is bilateral in 70% of cases. Individuals with medullary sponge kidney are at increased risk for kidney stones and urinary tract infection. A congenital disorder, or congenital disease, is a condition existing at birth and often before birth, or that develops during the first month of life (neonatal disease), regardless of causation. Of these diseases, those characterized by structural deformities are termed "congenital anomalies"; that is a different concept (MeSH) which involves defects in or damage to a developing fetus.
