Tiede, armed with a toy starting pistol, succeeded in forcing the aircraft to land at U.S. Air Force base at Tempelhof Airport in West Berlin. Ingrid Ruske took her young daughter with her. Not only did Tiede and Ruske claim sanctuary in West Berlin, but so did another six East Germans who were passengers.
