The word derives from the Greek word, meaning reed. In modern Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Kurdish, the word simply means "pen" or "pencil," while in Hindi and Urdu, the word solely means "pen." It is also the name of a system of Arabic transliteration, suggested in 1985. In Hebrew the Reed used traditionally used to write torah scrolls is called Qulmus ( )nowadays Ashkenazim mostly use a quil which they call by the same name, However Sephardim continue to use the traditional reed. Islamic calligraphy, colloquially known as Arabic calligraphy, is the artistic practice of handwriting, or calligraphy, and by extension, of bookmaking, in the lands sharing a common Islamic cultural heritage. This art form is based on the Arabic script, which for a long time was used by all Muslims in their respective languages. They used it to represent God because they denied representing God with images. Calligraphy is especially revered among Islamic arts since it was the primary means for the preservation of the Qur'an.
