The association was first called Enighet (translation: Unity), but in 1925 it was renamed R Idrottsfrening. R IF won the Swedish Cup in 1948, and in 1950 the club advanced into the Allsvenskan (first level). In the first season in the Allsvenskan, R IF became the runner-up. During its two year session in the Allsvenskan (1950-1951), R IF played at the Olympia soccer stadium in Helsingborg.
