Sonar 2087 (Paperback)

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sonar 2087 is a towed array sonar system for Royal Navy Type 23 frigates manufactured by Thales Underwater Systems. Sonar 2087 has replaced the Sonar 2031 towed array. The introduction of this advanced new Sonar has significantly enhanced the anti submarine warfare capability of the Royal Navy. It provides Type 23 frigates with the ability to hunt the latest submarines at great distances and localise them beyond the range at which they can launch an attack. Sonar 2087 is a Low Frequency Active Sonar (LFAS) and consists of both active and passive sonar arrays. During Exercise ORION 08, HMS Westminster, using Sonar 2087, conducted successful anti-submarine exercises in the Indian Ocean. Together with the presence of 6 Merlin HM1 helicopters of 814 Naval Air Squadron embarked in HMS Illustrious with their advanced anti-submarine equipment, the combination has re-affirmed the Royal Navy's reputation as a leader in anti submarine warfare.
