The village of Tonti is now little more than a bend in the road and a sign, near where the Illinois Central Railroad tracks cross Interstate 57.Tonti was named in honor of Henri de Tonti, an early Italian/French explorer of Illinois. Tonti Township may be the only monument to one of the first Europeans in Illinois.Tonti Township is located in Marion County, Illinois. The population was 1,033 at the 2000 census.
