Walter Hennecke (23 May 1898 - 1 January 1984) was a Konteradmiral with the Kriegsmarine during World War II and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross by Hitler for "a feat unprecedented in the annals of coastal defense.," when he wrecked Cherbourg's port.The Kriegsmarine was the name of the German Navy during the Nazi regime (1935-1945). It superseded the Reichsmarine and the Kaiserliche Marine of World War I. The Kriegsmarine was one of three official branches of the Wehrmacht, the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany.
