He ranks 51st of the 108 Liangshan heroes and 15th of the 72 Earthly Fiends. He is nicknamed "Multi-coloured Leopard." The Water Margin describes Yang Lin as a man with a round head, large and beautiful eyes, a straight nose, a squarish mouth, a narrow waist and broad shoulders. Yang is from Zhangde Henan province. He excels in martial arts and carries an iron spear. He is nicknamed "Multi-coloured Leopard." Yang Lin becomes a wandering outlaw and befriends Gongsun Sheng. Dai Zong goes to find Gongsun Sheng to help the Liangshan Marsh outlaws deal with Gao Lian. Dai meets Yang Lin by coincidence and they travel together. They pass by Yinma River and meet the bandits there led by Pei Xuan, Deng Fei and Meng Kang. Dai invites them to join Liangshan and they agree. Yang follows Dai back to Liangshan later after they found Gongsun Sheng.
