Phenomenological Study of Transformational Leadership Characteristics in Lesbians (Paperback)

This qualitative phenomenological case study explored the lived experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) leaders located within the United States, relating to how LGBT leaders exude transformational leadership characteristics. Thematic analysis of interview data using NVivo qualitative software program was conducted. The current study used a qualitative phenomenological method to interview 21 individuals with direct experience with leadership as a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgendered person. Eight core themes emerged. These themes included: Out of the closet, Openness, Workday, Leadership Type, Direct Influence, Time Management, Change, and Goal Setting. The data suggested that LGBT leaders exude transformational leadership characteristics and may benefit from the learned experiences of other LGBT leaders by capitalizing on those experiences as a reference point for mapping out a plan for leadership implementation.
