Lincoln was nominated by the Republicans for the Presidency, and was opposed by his old opponent, Stephen A. Douglas. We all know the result. We all know of his career in the five years' of his Presidency. From the time he took his oath of office to the moment when an assassin's hand carried him off, it is best described in his own words. "With malice toward none, with charity for all." "With firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right." Perhaps no man ever sat in the Presidential chair that seemed so little qualified for that great office as Lincoln when first nominated, but no man in American history ever rose to a crisis and turned scorn into praise as he did. His life will always be an example, and an Incentive to our young men. Think of this boy who, until he was eight years old, never had shoes and stockings on his feet. and of his final career. It is inspiring. It cannot be otherwise. For centuries his example will be quoted, and our young men will be better for it. God grant that no other President will have to face the trials he did, but if it should be so, may the verdict of his opponent be like that of Jefferson Davis: "Next to the surrender of Lee the darkest day the Confederacy saw was that of the death of Abraham Lincoln."
