The Sacred Rainbow (Paperback)

"The sky was black, with the sun filtering through. The Gentle People were puzzled, and then realized the reason for the black sky. With shocked exclamations they huddled together. Kneeling down and lifting their hands to the skies, they prayed anxiously to the Creator Kauha for help. The smell of death and sight of the vultures meant sure punishment from the Rain God who protected the Eland. His grace and power had been violated by the Foreigners." The Foreigners slaughter the Eland, the sacred antelope. According to the tale, the Eland's deliberate death can lead to the scarcity of game, and certain death from starvation for the Gentle People of the Desert. The elders of the Clan of the Eland decide that only a journey in search of the Ancestors in the mountains will appease the Rain God's wrath. Xau and Xama and animal friends set off on the quest. On the way they have to overcome many obstacles and challenges. With the help of Black Eagle, who empathizes with them, the journey is made and the home of the ancestors is found. However, the Foreigners aren't prepared to stop hunting the eland. Only when the Rain God, the Cloud People and Wind God work together to make conditions difficult for them, are the friends able to assist the Sun God, save their chameleon friend and restore the rainbow to the sky once more.
