Assessment of Arsenic Concentrations in Domestic Well Water, by Town, in Maine 2005-09 - Usgs Scientific Investigations Report 2010-5199 (Paperback)

This study was conducted to assist the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention in developing a better understanding of the statewide spatial occurrence of domestic wells with elevated arsenic levels at the individual town level, identify areas of the State that should be targeted for increased efforts to promote well-water testing, and generate data for potential use in predicting areas of the State likely to have very high levels of arsenic. These two figures, from the report, show the spatial variability in arsenic levels for towns with sufficient number of samples. Most towns have at least one well exceeding the arsenic drinking-water standard of 10 micrograms per liter, but in some towns, more than 30 percent of the wells have arsenic levels above the drinking-water standard.
