Alex the lion loves living at the zoo. Everyone thinks he's the king of New York But his friend Marty the zebra in convinced that there is more to life. After Marty sets out to explore the wild, he, Alex and their friends, Gloria the hippo and Melman the giraffe, find themselves on a ship bound for Africa.
