'Yes, I have seen it before, ' replied Tom, who had never told an untruth in his life. 'One night I heard a noise, and I came to see what it was, and I saw you here with a light.' 'Why didn't you tell me?' G 'Because I thought if you wanted me to know about it, you would tell me yourself.' 'Did you tell any one?' 'Only Nora--and she made me promise not to speak of it, as she said you evidently wished it kept a secret, and it was not our affair.' 'Nora's a sensible girl, a very sensible girl, ' said Ned. 'When was it you saw me here? What was I doing?' 'It was a good while ago--some months. You were only mixing sugar, uncle.' 'I remember. It was one night I forgot to shut the trap-door. Are you quite sure no one else saw me?' 'Quite sure, uncle.' Ned considered for some time with his keen eyes fixed on Tom. 'Well, never you work here, my man, unless you are quite sure the trap-door is down. And--I daresay Nora is a good enough girl, but it's not worthwhile to tell her anything more about the cellar at present. It's a little secret between you and me, Tom.' 'I will not say anything...
