Soon after Grover Maxwell's untimely death from heart failure on June 14, 1981, invitations to contribute to a volume of essays in his memory were sent to his colleagues, associates, collaborators, and students. This volume is the result of a generous and strong response to the invitation. The contributors represent several disciplines and several nationalities.
