But no On, on, on, they wave ceaselessly; and, to me at least, they seem to be accelerating their speed. When I was a child, how long a time to me was a year From Christmas, with its polished holly-leaves, and scarlet berries; its crisp hoar frost sparkling on tree and lawn; its bright evening fire, and fun and frolic, and tales; from this merry Christmas to the next, what a lifetime it appeared .But now, spring and snowdrops come; summer and roses; autumn and dahlias; they are come and are gone; and Christmas is here once more, in the twinkling of an eye. Speedily, indeed, do the seasons whirl round; but we shall not long whirl on with them. While they succeed each other as heretofore in their appointed course, we shall disappear; and where shall our place be found? Yonder, where the flowers are amaranthine? or there, where in the fiery atmosphere no blossom ever appears? Strange commotions have sprung up since last Christmas. Europe, the world, is stirred to its profoundest depths. We who were so long at peace, that some of us almost dreamed of disbanding our armies, we are at war; and in the course of the struggle, every nation of the Old World must, in all probability, take up arms. With what confidence our armies went forth They who then buckled on their armour were greeted as if already conquerors. Brave, noble spirits They seemed scarcely to dream of aught but of carrying the world before them. The landing on the Crimea ...
