Besides these, the illiterates among the retired and dependent are also given. The fact will be noticed that illiterate scholars are reported in some cases, bnt it should be borne in mind that scholars in public Institntions, who are classed as being in the public schools, are Included, and although at the date of enumeration they were considered as scholars, they had not received sufficient education to remove them from the Illiterate class, bnt this disability has undoubtedly been removed by subsequent instruction In those Institntions.
