The city extends from the Mississippi River north to Lake Pontchartrain, but only the portion nearest to the river is built up. The City Park is about three miles northwest from the business portion. The Exposition Park, which was the site of the American Exposition, of 1884, is located on the river about four miles west from the heart of the city. The streets mostly cross each other at right angles, and are arranged to conform with the bend of the river. Canal Street is the main business and residence thoroughfare and is also the dividing line between the French or Creole and American parts of the city. Canal Street divides many or the crossstreets into north and south, but some change names entirely in crossing it. Other prominent streets are St. Charles, Claiborne, Rampart, Esplanade and Royal.
