And while it may not be deemed wise as a conference for us to give any expression concerning the subject of pensions and other questions that may seem to have a political bearing, still it seems wise to express our sympathy with the men of the. army and navy who survive and the families of those who have departed. Your committee would therefore recommend for adoption the following: Resulted, 1. That we will cooperate, so far as possible, in the sacred services of Memorial Day, that national Sabbath of the Grand Army of the Republic. 2. That we will cordially cooperate in maintaining the custom of inviting the veterans of the late war and their friends, and all who are in sympathy with a sound Americanism, to a sermon to be delivered on the Sabbath previous to Memorial Day.: . That we hereby express our sympathy with the soldiers and the families of soldiers, and will endeavor to give them special pastoral attention, that they may be led to the enjoyment of that hope that the soldier has done so much to prepare the way for, in the consolidation and uplifting of the nation. 4. That, while in some instances old soldiers may not have been wise in the use to which they have put themselves, yet it must be true that no man who has made a barrirade of bin body to stop the shells of the enemy can so forfeit the gratitude of the nation and the honor due him for what he has done and been, as to be beyond our special effort to uplift and save.
