Established in 1946 under the United States Army Air Forces, its mission was to organize and administer the integrated air defense system of the Continental United States (CONUS), exercise direct control of all active measures, and coordinate all passive means of air defense. The command was inactivated on 31 March 1980. The mission of air defense is a major foundation of the United States Air Force. In 1916, no less a visionary than Alexander Graham Bell warned about the possibility of airship raids on the United States.
