W. and Mary Lois (Church) Cowles, who survives him. Three children living. Died July 17, 1913, at San Diego, Cal., of peritonitis, age S7 years, 11 months and 10 days. Rev. Francis Lawson was born in London, England, January 19th, 1825. He came to America in 1833; was ordained in 1847 in Vernon Centre, New York; was active in Home Missionary service in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin until 1882; filled pastorates in Iowa and Nebraska until 1895, when he came to California and served churches at Guerneville, Oakland and Villa Park. He died December 26th, 1911, at Alhambra, California. At the time of his death he was a member of the First Congregational Church of Pasadena and the funeral was conducted by his very dear friend, Dr. R. R. Meredith. This in barest outline is a statement of the career of Mr. Lawson, but the thing that is of more than ordinary interest lies in the fact that he was the oldest minister in ordination in California at the time of his death. He was ordained in 1847, two years before California was occupied by the Americans. It was this that lent unusual interest to the story of his remarkable career because he was a pioneer missionary pastor in the truest sense of that word. How much we of this day and generation owe to the self-secrificing labors of those early pioneers, eternity alone will reveal. Of this immortal company, Brother Lawson was a worthy mem ber. REV.
