These "Teachings to a friend" were written in Hindi. Anard T. HIngonari translated them into English and published them with the title A Thought for Each Day. Hingonari tells how after the death of Vidya, his wife, Gandhi used to come to him "every morning after prayer to encourage and console me, writing some words to meditate upon." When in 1946 he asked permission to publish his "Thoughts," the man of God told him: "If you want to publish them, do it after my death. Maybe I am not able to live according to my writings. If I am faithful to them up to the last moment of my life, then and only then, they deserve to be published." It was worth publishing them. And it is worth reading them.
